Wal-Mart announced it is offering low-fee checking accounts, and helping customers shop for insurance and Medicare plans in selected stores. Wal-Mart is taking advantage of the fact that many of its stores are located in areas where residents don’t have any banking or healthcare products.
If this venture works out, Wal-Mart will position itself as the true, overall low-price champion—beyond groceries and general merchandise. It may also be the beginning of several new categories entering their stores in the near future.
