We live in a time when your identity is yours to create. And that may not have anything to do with your skin color, your gender, your heritage or even your family. For decades, the census has given us neat and tidy demographic breakouts of the US population, but this cannot account for mindset and cultural influence. Despite my white skin and European heritage, I identify with the Hispanic culture in many ways. My family does not. As they say, you can’t judge a book by its cover…so be careful that you don’t let demographics obscure the finer details of cultural identity.
